about us

The number 916 is not just descriptive of this vineyard’s location; the symmetry of its form also reflects the philosophy of balance and harmony in viticulture and winemaking practices.

At its heart, Nine One Six showcases site and seasonal variations which are unique to the Steels Creek microclimate within the Yarra Valley region.

Harvest is deliberately limited in quantity, handpicked, and segmented by distinctive fruit characters. Vintages are only produced in years of unobjectionable conditions.

After inner-city living, looking for a bucolic lifestyle on the outskirts of Melbourne, John Brand and Erin-Marie O’Neill moved to the Yarra Valley in 2008. The local community welcomed them, especially the previous owners of the property; who introduced them to well regarded viticulturist John Evans already having looked after the vines for 15 years, who in turn introduced renowned winemaker Ben Haines. The fires in 2009 were challenging, with the vineyard and all possessions affected, but with the arrival of Henry in 2010, fresh perspectives and amazing natural regeneration, the first vintage of Nine One Six pinot noir in 2012 was (and continues to be) very much celebrated.

Now, in homage to the past, present, and future of this place, Nine One Six combines local history, art, and entertaining weather data visualisations along with winemaker notes to tell the story of each vintage.
